Robotic Workers – E-Commerce in the 21st Century
Robots with point-to-point deliveries are set to be a hot seller for ecommerce companies, as well as businesses looking to increase productivity and improve order processing and inventory control. Robotic workers will play a major role in driving E-Commerce into the 21 st Century.
In his blog The Robot Report, Frank Tobe, the co-founder and CEO of ROBO Global, which developed a tracking index to track the robotics sector, said that point-to-point mobile devices are becoming popular because they replace humans with easy-to-use devices. This results in a quick ROI (return on investment).
It would appear that the robotic workers would be leaving behind a trail of human workers who are unemployed. There is evidence to suggest that this is not the case. Boxed, an online retailer, began using robots to make their employees’ jobs easier. Employees could instead of walking thousands steps every day, stand at stations while conveyor belts delivered the goods. They did not cut jobs but instead became more efficient and added a 3rd shift to meet the increasing demand.
When we think of robots, our minds go to machines that fetch items while humans do their best work, which is manipulating the items. As long as humans are in charge of the final, complex steps of packing boxes, this paradigm will continue to exist.
The number of jobs in e-commerce, warehouses and logistics has increased by more than 400,000 over the last decade. Amazon is responsible for the majority of new jobs. Amazon is at the forefront of automation, but it’s not alone. Amazon has installed 100,000 robots at 25 warehouses around the world since 2014. Amazon has also nearly tripled the number of employees it employs per hour, going from 45,000 to 125,000. According to a Deutsche Bank report, its use of robots has reduced the costs associated with operating a warehouse by around 20 percent. These savings have allowed Amazon to hire more employees and open new facilities at a lower cost.
Automation and robotic workers are only going to get more advanced in the future. Mark Wulfraat is the president of MWVPL a consulting company. He says that “what’s next will be robotic arms combined with vision and suction technologies”.
